What is the best time of year for hedge cutting?

Hedge maintenance is normally carried out during the winter months. Ideally between November and early March.

At this time of the year there is minimal risk of disturbing any nesting birds and the plants are largely dormant. The other advantage of trimming hedges in winter is that there is less danger of pests and diseases entering the open wounds.

Having said that, garden hedges and topiary can sometimes start to look a little unruly by midsummer. That being the case, provided that we’re certain there are no birds’ nests in the hedge, we’re more than happy to give them a tidy up.

Is it possible to cut a very overgrown hedge?

Keep it Green Garden Maintenance have the exact equipment needed to bring an overgrown hedge back under control. We have platforms so that we can work safely, heavy duty trimmers and trained staff. We also have chipper shredders to make the waste easier to take off site.

However, it may take more than one trim to tidy up a very overgrown hedge. Particularly if the hedging plants are starting to become more like trees  with foliage concentrated at the top of the stem rather than the bottom.  In which case, we will advise on the best course of treatment and the likely time scales.

Some species of hedging plant don’t take kindly to drastic trimming. Leylandii and similar conifers simply hate it if you cut into old wood – in fact they won’t recover.

If your overgrown hedge isn’t suitable for cutting, then the Keep It Green Garden Maintenance Team also offer a removal and replanting service.

What about repairing gaps in a hedge?

From time to time, pests, diseases or accidental damage can kill of a section of hedge. It’s not pretty and it will need to be repaired.

Our first job is to assess what’s gone wrong. If it’s an accident, that’s OK. But if there are pests or diseases involved it’s important to get them under control before they can spread. Biosecurity is becoming more of an issue with climate change and it’s predicted we’ll see more and more hedges affected by box caterpillar and the like.

Once the cause of the problem has been treated, we will remove any dead plants, prepare the soil and establish new plants of a suitable size and species.

What does hedge cutting cost?

The price of hedge cutting varies depending on the size of the hedge, the plant species and how easy it is to access. We normally base our estimate on the time it would take to reshape your hedge and dispose of the green waste.

However, a quote costs nothing. If you’d like us to pop by and take a look, we’re more than happy to do so. Just call Chris on 07702 585688 to arrange a suitable day and time.
